Okra Stew (Bamya) Recipe

Okra Stew, or Bamya as it’s called in the Middle East, is a main dish made with okra, meat and tomato sauce. It is served usually with white rice. Here is a very easy and yummy recipe of make the okra stew (Bamya).

How to Make Okra Stew (Bamya)?

Ingredients:

  • 1 kilo of diced meat (you can use with or without bone meat)
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 6 cloves garlic, sliced
  • 3 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon mixed spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 loomi
  • 4 large tomatoes (blended)
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 500g okra

Okra Preparation Method

  1. In a Pot, heat the ghee, add the onion, garlic and stir for a few minutes until golden.
  2. Add the meat pieces, spices, cinnamon, turmeric, pepper and salt and stir for 2 minutes to roast the spices and change the color of the meat.
  3. Add the loomi, tomato sauce, tomato paste and mix it with the meat.
  4. Add 2 cups of boiled water.
  5. Cover the Pot and leave it until meat is well cooked.
  6. Add okra when meat is cooked
  7. Put the lid on and leave it for 10-15 mins or until the okra is cooked.
